Obtaining Patent Protection Internationally.
When investing in a business decision you want to make sure it is effective and beneficial.
Both these words describe an international patent.
You MUST protect your business or invention internationally.
The PCT or Patent Cooperation Treaty is an international agreement with more than 150 contracted countries. Because of the PCT, businesses are able to seek patent protection in a multitude of countries all while filling a single “international” patent application. Rather than filing separate applications for each country you want to protect your invention in.
The goal is to acquire, maintain, and manage protection for your invention. Here are a couple things to do that will allow you to file for patent protection.
- Conduct a patent search to make sure your invention is unique and not in the public domain.
- File a PCT application.
- File a patent application directly in each country.
- Use the Paris invention.
It’s important to note that obtaining international patent protection can be a difficult and expensive process. It is important to seek the assistance of a patent attorney or agent who is familiar with the requirements and procedures of the countries where you are seeking protection.
